Did You Buy a PETLAND Puppy? (HSUS) HSUS 2009-06-29 12:29PM
Following an announcement March 17 of a nationwide lawsuit against Petland Inc. and The Hunte Corporation, hundreds of people have contacted The Humane Society of the United States to tell their heartbreaking stories of purchasing dogs they were told came from good breeders. The lawsuit accuses the pet trade giants of conspiring to sell unhealthy puppy mill dogs to the public.\"Our staff has been swamped with calls,\" said Kathleen Summers, director of the Stop Puppy Mills campaign. \"Many of the stories would bring tears to your eyes. I just spoke to a woman whose husband purchased a Petland puppy for her on Valentines Day. The puppy started coughing as soon as she came home from the store. The puppy has been diagnosed with lung and heart problems and has been hospitalized for the past several days. The family is not sure their puppy will survive. What should have been a heartwarming story for this couple is turning into heartbreak.\"A number of callers reported spending up to $10,000 on veterinary bills to treat their dogs’ infectious diseases or congenital defects. Others said their puppies died shortly after purchase. In the days following the news of the lawsuit, The HSUS Stop Puppy Mills social networking groups saw a surge in membership; the campaigns Facebook group grew by more than 5,600 members and its MySpace group grew by more than 300 members. The Facebook petition to tell Petland to stop selling puppies had more than 460,000 signatures as of March 23, showing that this issue has struck a chord with hundreds of thousands of animal advocates on the Web.Making the CaseThe lawsuit, filed in federal court March 16, alleges that Petland and mass commercial broker The Hunte Corporation are violating federal and state laws by misleading customers across the country into believing the puppies sold in Petland stores are healthy and come from high-quality breeders, when in fact many of them come from commercial dog producers known as puppy mills.\"They assured me she was not from a puppy mill because she had a pedigree,\" said one caller who had purchased her puppy in Florida. \"Later I found out she was from a broker in Oklahoma.\"Puppy mills are commercial-breeding facilities that raise dogs in shockingly poor conditions, placing profit and a low overhead above the health of breeding dogs and their puppies. The dogs are often kept in wire cages, stacked on top of each other, with no exercise, socialization, veterinary care, or loving human interaction. After their fertility wanes, the breeding animals are destroyed or discarded. Petland continues to deny it supports these substandard breeding facilities, and claims to follow \"Humane Care Guidelines\" developed in conjunction with the U.S. Government. However, the USDA recently informed The HSUS in writing that it has no record of any such guidelines.Tell Us Your StoryConsumers who have purchased sick puppies from Petland can contact The HSUS by filling out an online form at humanesociety.org/puppymillstory. Loving labs free to good home (North Andover)  (pic) North Andover 2009-06-29 12:04PM
My husband and I need to move, and have been unable to find a home that will take us and our two labs. We have a yellow male, Murphy, 5 years old, and a chocolate female, Morgan, 4 years old. They are great with kids and cats, and love to play with one another. They are house trained, do not eat furniture or shoes, and just love to be walked and pet. They have never missed an appointment at the vets, until this year. We have not been able to afford to take them for their regular check-ups. If you are interested to meet us, please let me know by emailing back. I can go over past medical history, and give other information. The dogs come with collars, leashes, toys, beds, and we actually have two dog doors (with or without doors) that are also free to the right person. We just want to find them a good home, where they will be happy and well cared for. Location: North Andoverits NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

HSUS and Michael Vick 2009-06-29 2:04PM
Its easy to generalize. Please do more research before implying the Humane Society of the US is somehow endorsing Michael Vicks criminal activities or the horrendous pain and suffering he inflicted on all the innocent dogs. The HSUS was instrumental in getting the guy busted and sending him to prison! If Vick can be used to help educate the very people who still think dogfighting is \"cool\" - and maybe raise awareness about the cruelty and suffering inherent in this blood sport so that it will one day be eradicated, let it be. Education is the key to opening minds and changing behavior.May 20, 2009What’s Next for Michael Vick? There was nobody tougher on Michael Vick than The Humane Society of the United States. After sufficient facts came to light about the happenings at Bad Newz Kennels in Surry County, Virginia—the sometime residence of Vick that had morphed into a dogfighting staging ground—The HSUS urged state and federal authorities to prosecute him and we made a key confidential informant available to federal authorities, which proved vital to the case.We also campaigned, along with others, to urge the Atlanta Falcons to drop Vick, the NFL to suspend him, and his corporate sponsors (such as Nike) to sever their ties. All of that happened, and the fuel that drove all of these actions was the rage and disgust that so many millions of Americans felt once the details came out.Vick and the other three individuals at the vortex of the criminal network at Bad Newz should have been prosecuted and punished, and they were. They did horrible things.Long before the Vick case, it was The HSUS, working with our allies in Congress led by Reps. Earl Blumenauer and Elton Gallegly, that drove the enactment of strong federal laws to crack down on animal fighting—banning any interstate or foreign transport of animals for fighting and upgrading penalties with amendments to the Animal Welfare Act in 2002. We worked on a further upgrade of the law in 2007 to make it a federal felony to move dogs across state lines. For years, we had been working with the law enforcement arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture—the Office of Inspector General—sharing intelligence on animal fighting crimes, emphasizing the corrosive impact of animal fighting on our communities, and urging them to be more aggressive in investigating cases. When the Vick case came to light, these federal authorities grabbed the torch, especially after they saw the Surry County prosecutor failing to take action. For their leadership, we honored federal prosecutors and investigators in 2007 at our annual Law Enforcement Awards ceremony. For The HSUS, dogfighting had long been a priority concern, and we knew it was an epidemic problem, especially in urban communities. But most people considered it a relic issue—a settled matter and a rare occurrence. The Vick case synced public sentiment with the scale of the problem, and dogfighting rightly reoccupied a priority slot on the animal protection agenda in America. The HSUS tried to channel this energy in the aftermath of the Vick case, and we helped to pass a remarkable 21 new laws against animal fighting, including a third upgrade of the federal law. Thanks to our supporters, we amped up our rewards program and worked with state Attorneys General and other law enforcement agencies to advertise the program. We set up tip lines so we could gather other information. We established community-based programs to do outreach to young people at risk of getting enmeshed in the world of dogfighting. We expanded our training of law enforcement agents in investigation and prosecution of animal fighting crimes.Last year, we were involved in more than 250 busts of animal fighting operations, both dogfighting and cockfighting. So with this record of action, I think I’d be the least likely guy to end up sitting at a small table and talking calmly with Michael Vick about his interest in working with us.But when you step back and ponder it, we are actually the most logical place for him to go. We have the most developed programs on the issue, so if he’s sincere about making a difference, there’s no better place to land.I sat with the man, but I still don’t know what’s in his heart. He told me he did terrible things to dogs. He said he grew up with dogfighting as a boy, and that he never sufficiently questioned it as he grew into manhood. He said this experience has been a trauma and he’s changed forever. And he said he wants to show the American public that he is committed to helping combat this problem. He asked for an opportunity to help. I want to give him that opportunity. If he makes the most of it, and demonstrates a sincere, long-term commitment to the task, then it may prove to be a tipping point in our campaign to eradicate dogfighting. If he demonstrates a fleeting or superficial interest, then it will be his own failing, not ours. Our campaign will march forward regardless. It’s up to him, and we at The HSUS reserve judgment until he demonstrates that he’s part of the solution rather than a further part of the problem.Maybe if there had been an intervention program in Newport News 15 years ago, a young Michael Vick would have grown to love and respect pit bulls, and he would not have done these terrible things to dogs. For me, it’s not about Michael Vick and providing endless punitive treatment. It’s about stopping other young people from going down the road Vick took. It’s about having kids today put down their break sticks and destroy their pit bull treadmills. We’ve done a lot with the law, and with law enforcement, and that work continues. But the most urgent challenge we face is interrupting the cycle of violence that leads kids down this dead end path, one that’s paved with animal misery. They need to see that dogfighters never succeed. They are criminals, and there’s no good outcome. Michael Vick’s story is a narrative they need to hear.its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

Question: Frontline and Toy Dogs (Cambridge) Cambridge 2009-06-29 1:42PM
Happy day!Question for anyone who might have an answer. I have two tiny poodle mixes, a 5 lb. male and an 8 lb. female. I use Frontline on them to prevent fleas and ticks. The smallest \"grade\" of Frontline they have is for dogs 25 pounds and under. Im wondering if, as a measure to save their little bodies unnecessary amounts of chemicals (and as a cost saving measure), I can split one dose between my two doggies and have the treatment still be effective. I asked my vet and she thought it made sense to split the dose, but wanted to call the company to make sure. All Frontline would tell her is that it hasnt been \"tested\" so splitting the dose is not \"recommended.\" Sounds to me like they just dont want to lose a buck, but I wanted to solicit some advise from my Craigslist friends first to make sure Im doing the right thing for my diggy dogs! Anyone have any knowledge about or experience with this?Gracias!Shara Location: Cambridgeits NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
HELP!!! Looking for owner of beagle/beagle-looking mix (Back Bay Station, Boston) Back Bay Station, Boston 2009-06-29 1:39PM
Hi - My husband and I saw you and your dog - looked like a beagle or a beagle mix - outside of back bay station on Clarendon Street at 3:30 on Friday 6/26/09. You were wearing a pink shirt... Your dog bit our Golden Retriever puppy in a what seemed to be typical dog scuffle. Our puppy was bleeding so we had to take her to the Emergency room. She has not had all of her vaccines, so by law she is now under \"house quarentine\" for 6 months.....!!PLEASE HELP!!! We are not angry and have no ill will - we just need your dogs vaccination records to prove that your dog has had its rabies shot - this will completely lift the quarentine on our puppy, it will have no repurcussions for you, and we will pay all fees associated, if any... We want her to lead a normal and well balanced 6 months with lots of exercise outside!!! PLEASE CONTACT US!!!! Great Fish Tank and Stand! Best Offer! (Boston - North End)  (pic) Boston - North End 2009-06-29 11:28AM
This is a 30 gallon fish tank and matching stand with everything you need to get up and running in no time. I have used this tank in my apt. for 2 years but cant take it to my new place. I had a friend adopt my fish last month and have started to drain the tank to be moved (as seen in pics). I have rigged this tank to have the filter mounted on the skinny side so it can be used as a room divider with no view obstruction. Its a great set up and comes with filter, heater, hood with UV light, chemicals, food, gravel, plants and castle and everything you need to get going! Buying all these items can cost a ton (trust me!). The stand is black wood and has storage. The glass looks foggy in this pic but the tank is very clean and works/looks great! Also the hood looks messed up in this pic but it fits and works fine. I was draining the water that day. Email with any questions. Must pick up but I will help you load it. Our goal is a happy, healthy dog! If you would like your dog walked on his or her own, we can do that. We can also walk your dogs with other dogs to give them the comfort of friends and to help their socialization. We can do 30, 45 or 60 minute walks, Monday - Friday, regardless of the weather. If there is a fenced park within reasonable walking distance from you, or an unfenced one if your dog can obey commands off-leash, I can bring your dog there to run alone or with my dogs. I also offer discounts for multi-dog households. I can come by twice a day if necessary and also provide overnight care. Would you rather your dog had an outing? I can bring your dog on a two hour hike around nature trails, paths and conservation land. If your dog can consistently obey off-leash commands, he or she may run off-leash (where applicable) with my dog. The outings cost a little more but allow the opportunity for your dog to play and enjoy nature. Are you going away for the weekend and need extra help? I can come by and walk your dog or take him or her overnight in my apartment where he or she can enjoy the company of my two dogs, their beds and their toys. Training: I would also be willing to help you train your dog and/or continue their training during the walks or at your residence. Experience: I have 3 years of experience walking dogs for other people as well as more than 10 years of experience walking and working with my own and those of friends. Also…I can take care of busywork such as bringing in mail, changing kitty litter boxes, watering plants, feeding the fish or hamster, and other small tasks that you would like done while you are out. References: Great references available upon request. I would love to help you keep up the care of your dog while you are busy at work. ***Cats*** (Medford) Medford 2009-06-29 10:37AM
I have 3 cats that I love with all my heart. I am moving to the UK and dont feel its fair to quarenteen them and do not want to put them in a shelter. Apollo is a 13yr old male (fixed). He is a black, fat, lazy, love bug..lol Harry and George were a year in April (they are not fixed). They are black w/ white marks, love to cuddle with each other and look like twins. I adopted them at 8wks together because they were so close. I want them to go to a LOVING home. I will split Apollo from the \"twins\" if I have too but would rather not split the twins up. They are great little men and the hardest part of leaving is not having them with me. Please only serious people! They are like my kids and only want them with a wonderful family... male pug looking for home (worc/cambridge) worc/cambridge 2009-06-29 10:24AM
HII have a 2 1/2 yr old not neutered male pug for adoption. Please read my full post before responding! Thanks!I have gone through 4 families that at the last minute decided they no longer wanted to adopt (one had a good reason) so PLEASE talk to your family and make sure that before you respond EVERYONE in your household is ready and looking to adopt a pug. After talking for weeks to 4 familes I am getting kinda fustrated with peoples mind games (sry if that sounds rude)In your resonse, please tell me everything about your family. where you live, who lives in your house, about your house, yard (fenced?) etc. What he will be doing during the day, where he will be and who he will be with. He is not neutered so a home that has never had a dog would be best for him because if there is scent of another dog, he will mark, unless you get him neutered. He is very spoiled, and I love him very much. I have had him since a pup. The reason why I am giving him up for adoption is only because I want him to find a loving, settled family that can provide him with a forever home. I am only 21, and my life has become very hectic and busy and I find myself to never be home, which means he is always alone and I feel horrible about it. I am also moving to Cambridge and once school starts again things will be even more hectic. I just want him to find a loving, caring family who will give him so much love and a settled, forever home. He is on a wellness plan, which i need to cancel and I owe $. His adoption fee is 350, but if I find the right family I am willing to bring it down. Ive made posts in the past, and recently realized that alot of emails were going to my spam which i dont check. Now i will check my spam so all emails will be responded to. Remeber to please answer all my questions. Emails with one little line wont be considered. I want to make sure he goes to a wonderful hom ethat really wants a pug. Thank You! Looking for a Doggie Day Care (Dracut to Woburn)  (pic) Dracut to Woburn 2009-06-29 10:00AM
I just adopted an Italian Greyhound from a rescue. She is pretty good with housetraining, but I dont think shes ready to stay all day while Im at work. Right now Im bringing her to work with me so she doesnt have to be alone, but I cant do that all the time. I would love to find a doggie day care to bring her to for at least the first few weeks, but I cant find one that is on my commute. I drive from Dracut, right near UMass Lowell, to Cummings Park in Woburn. I go down Rt. 3 to 95 N. I would love to find a person that stays at home during the day (8 am to 4:30 pm) that would be willing to take her during the day over a facility, but would be interested in either. Female kitty needs a home! (Billerica)  (pic) Billerica 2009-06-29 9:40AM
I recently rescued a stray, she was defininately someones kitty at some point. My guess is she is lost and I am unable to find her owner. I have brought her to be spayed and she now has all of her shots( I have the paperwork). She is so lovable and friendly and she just did not belong outside all of the time! Small Caged Animal Help Available (Northshore, MA) Northshore, MA 2009-06-29 8:26AM
I am not a shelter or a rescue but I am willing to help people in need of a new home or (Caged pet boarding) for their Healthy caged animal. Like a Safe Haven for your pet(s)!I can guarantee a very loving home here.Your pet will have daily ,a warm home, clean bedding, fresh water, family style home, lots of playtime(out of cage), handleing, fresh veggies, food, all of this everyday and the animal will not be in a stressful overfull shelter. All animals surrendered will under go a quaranteen for 3 weeks before the animal goes up for adoption. Unsocialized animals get the attention they need to come out of there shells.***Please do not release your pet out into the wild hopeing someone will find them and give them a home. So many animals are released and die within 24 hours or less or days due to hungry wild animals, being hit by cars, NO proper shelter, No proper food available or water. Please if you can not afford or just can not keep your pets please find a safe loving home or take them to a shelter, even if most are full at this time you can find some further away, its worth the drive to save a life*** Surrendering (Not always available, but dont hesitate to ask at anytime) Please if your pet is sick be honest as I am not able to accept them due to the health of the other pets in my home. I would recommed those animals be surrendered to a shelter or rescue for proper veterinary care. thanks Sorry there will be no money exchanged for the animal or supplies surendered into my care. I do though except food, bedding and cages as a donation for surrender. I also will not pick up the animal(s) or meet unless you are with in 10 miles of me.A list of animals I DO accept are guinea pigs, hedgehogs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, dwarf rabbits, smaller birds like finches, parakeets and lovebirds, degus, turtles (aquatic & land), leopard geckos, geckos, frogs, salamenders, bearded dragons (must come with cage & supplies), If I have not listed your pet needing help please email and I will try to help the best I can. Please DO NOT contact me if you have rats (due to common health issues), snakes, spiders, dogs or cats needing a new home. I only accept animals in cages. I can give you a vet reference and A++ references if needed. If a visit of my home is needed, my home is open to you, all you have to do is ask.My cages are picked/cleaned everyday or as needed, I am a stay at home mom so the animals get the proper care, handling, proper nutrition and attention they need daily. ((Donations of small animal foods and shavings are always welcome and very much needed))I will get back to you ASAP!If the cage & supplies do come with the animal that would be great but if not I will try my hardest to accomidate there needs. If you have spare cages to donate, please do as I can always use them, as well as the supplies. *IMPORTANT* RE: mange? (cl) 2009-06-29 8:18AM
That looks like ringworm, which is very contagious to you and anyone else in your family. However, no one can diagnose a skin problem correctly like that without doing a skin scraping. You really need to get to a better vet, and have them do a complete job of identifying what is growing on your dog - and keep in mind, it is very possible to have more than one problem simultaneously. Just because they put him on antibiotics, doesnt mean he doesnt have another problem that could be spreading around your house that is not being treated! This is what is wrong with many unreputable rescues - they believe it is more important to save a life , than it is to match up a healthy dog with a qualified family. What they have done is handed a generous person a big vet bill, and a dog that has not been cared for - not by the previous owners, nor by the rescue. And that is unconscionable.its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
