Green Acres Animal Sanctuary - Rainsville, Alabama Please take the time to read Carols story and look through to see if there are any dogs you can take into your home or program to find them new homes. This is not an easy task, as you will note, most of the dogs are large and many are black. We need all the eyes and ears we can get to save these babies Time is VERY limited. This is what is left of Carols house after a fire destroyed it last November, claiming the lives of over 65 cats and 18 disabled dogs. You can see the large burned tree where the fire started outside her home. This was Carols family home. She did not have insurance because the home was very old and the cost was too great. Carol now lives in a garage that was detached from her burned home. It is a small concrete block building. Thanks to generous donations, Carol now has a wood burning stove, and a hot water heater. Her electricity is run from the street by an extention cord and we are working on finding the $800 to get the power run legally underground to her garage. She is slowly trying to create a normal living space for herself and her remaining pets. Her worries are not for herself though. She says she needs nothing but to get these dogs to a safe haven. She is an amazing 65 year old woman who has built this sanctuary with her own hands. Large shed-like wooden dog houses and huge yards contain these dogs. It was all built by Carol. Now she just fears for the safety of the dogs she loves so much. Rainsville, Alabama - For over 10 years, Rainsville citizens and city officials and workers have called upon Carol to take care of all the stray animals in the area. This is not a poor town but they do not spend money on things like an animal shelter. They just call on Carol and she steps up to the plate. After her house fire, attention was drawn to Carol and her large number of dogs. Suddenly the city officials played ignorant and many people against her. The whole town that has brought her dogs over the years have turned against her. The neighbors who had bought adjacent property and build their new homes saw an opportunity to get rid of the eye soar they called Carols place. Now, Carol has been told by the courts to get rid of all the dogs. She can only have 3 dogs on her 4 1/2 acres of property while the breeders across the street have 17 and yet more breeders at the other end of the street have more! To explain this to you I simply say, the city is named Rainsville and the Judge in this matter is Judge Raines. Time Frame:- These dogs need out NOW! Carol LOST her second round of appeals. The official court order came down on these dogs back in late October. Thankfully, through the publicity of the mass movement and national support of the plight of Carols dogs, the city has given her a \"good ole boy handshake agreement\" to hold off on executing any of the dogs as long as the rescue effort continues. Unfortunately, this deal ends FEBRUARY 9th, 2009! We have 17 hard to place dogs to move in 6 weeks! This is where the truth comes out......who can take on a dog that is tough to place knowing you will have him/her for several months and will need to spend extra effort with him/her to get her placed? As soon as we get some of the dogs we have already taken placed in new homes, I will be taking some tough ones, please step up to the plate and take one too. If you have questions about individual dogs, feel free to email Morgan directly at forgottenpaws@yahoo.com. I have spent extensive time with these dogs doing temperament testing and assessments http://www.forgottenpaws.com/GreenAcres1-10.htmhttp://www.forgottenpaws.com/GreenAcres11-20.htm its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 998223983 |

Uh...Advice, Please? ...Maybe? (Mouse SOS) |

Tonight my mother made an unpleasant discovery while cooking dinner: a dead mouse in the bottom of her bottle of cooking oil! After hearing her girly shrieks I came down to investigate, only to find that the \"dead\" mouse was indeed still alive, but barely. Being an animal lover, I just could not bring myself to dump the poor little thing outside to freeze to death, as requested. As it just so happens, I currently have another unwanted mouse (my snake did not eat her), so I had a place to put the bedraggled survivor mouse. She seems to be a baby--not entirely full grown but just about there, and shes jet black.I have no idea how long she was stuck in that bottle (she was clever enough to actually take the cap off of it before getting trapped), and when I was able to free her she seemed very shell shocked, which I guess is to be expected after an ordeal like that :-(. As Im writing this she seems to be coming out of her daze a bit. She had a little bit of water, but is not interested in food--probably because she has a belly full of oil. The resident (domestic) mouse has not realized that she has a tankmate yet, and Im hoping that the introduction goes smoothly. After all that the little wild one has been through, it would be so unfair to have her killed by another mouse. Ive actually had experience with mice as pets and breeders, but this is indeed a first for me. We also have two resident indoor cats, so were not sure how this mouse escaped detection, although Im pretty sure my big boned Ragdoll wouldnt know how to catch a mouse even if he saw one! Lol.Anyway, I wanted to share this little story because it was so random and unexpected. I dont know if the little thing will survive her ordeal, but Im hoping she pulls through. Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated, but please no remarks like \"you should have just killed it--its just a mouse.\" If I felt that way I would have done it. If all goes well, this little girl and her tankmate will be needing a new home. If anyone is interested in adopting two survivors, please let me know! Ive named the baby mouse Olive....seemed appropriate given the circumstances :-). Thanks for reading, and I look forward to seeing your remarks--the good, the bad, and the ugly! This being craigslist, Im bracing myself for the last two, hehe. Regards on this frigid night. its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 998159958 |

I have a 4 yr old yellow lab who was recently spayed. Since spaying about 3 months ago shes gained weight, become less active, seems less mentally acute, and a slight pain in her rear leg has gotten much worse so she limps for 10-15 minutes every time she gets up from a nap. Ive been reading about Estrapet, which is supposed to reverse many of the adverse effects of spaying (ovariohysterectomy). If you have any experience with this product, please let me know. Thanks!Matt its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1007612946 |

I need advice. Please, no ill will. We have a 7 month old puppy. Weve had him for 5 months now. We are working with him every day. He is not trained at all. Although he holds in his pee and poop all day while we are at work, as soon as were home, he \"goes\" at will. Even if I take him out every half hour, he still pees (and ocassionally poops) in the house. It doesnt matter if I give him less water either...he still goes. He is healthy...according to our vet. There is nothing physically wrong with him...he just doesnt care. At first I thought he was just a harder dog to house break (our other dog who is now 1 and a 1/2 was trained in 2 weeks) but he holds it for 7-9 ours while we are work. I need help! Also, the bigger he gets, the more destructive he gets. He gets into EVERYTHING. It doesnt matter how high up we put things, he bangs on it until it moves close enough to grab. Hes chewed through multiple crates, blankets, carpets, toys, baseboards, tables, chairs, trash cans...you name it. As I said, we are constantly working with him...but it makes no difference. I dont know how it could be us...our other dog is totally fine!My husband is being ridiculous and impossible. He is just as annoyed (to say the least) as I am...but absolutely refuses to pay a trainer or bring him to obedience school. I dont know if its some macho thing or what...thats a whole different story. The point it, I dont know how to fix this dog. Please, if anyone has any tips, I will be eternally grateful. Thanks so much in advance. its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1007597870 |

You say you are *NOT A BREEDER*....OK, so you are looking for homes for these pups that were a result of 2 dogs breeding. Maybe I missed it, but there is never any mention of getting the parents spayed/neutered after \"rehoming\" their offspring - only descriptions of the mother and father...and how much you paid for them. You sound desperate to find homes for the pups. Hopefully, youll consider getting the parents fixed so you wont have to spam this board again with your sad tale of why you need to find homes for your rat terriers. Keep reposting ....and when you finally have them all sold, please get the dogs fixed! its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1007557752 |

Chloe is a 10 yr old cat who is still young at heart and full of energy. She is an indoor cat (still has all claws), has been neutered and has shots. I am getting married and my fiance is alergic. Chloe would do best in a quiet home with no other pets or young children (young children make her skittish). She would be a great companion for a woman. Once she gets used to her new home, she will follow you around, curl up next to you and greet you at the door! Also great with keeping mice away!I will include lots of food and litter, covered litter box and carrying crate to get you started. A small adoption fee can be negotiated for the right home. its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1007506096 |

The information below is an offering of legitimate veterinary care for low-income pet owners who are interested but cannot afford traditional vet fees. Hello. I have a German shepherd mix that I know would love to have a job. He instinctively searches every car we go by, as well as any out of place item. He is also freakishly intelligent. With our cities, and also the suburbs, getting overrun with drugs, I want to do my part to make things a little safer. However, I am not willing to give him up, so no suggestions to donate him. I have been unable to find any info online, so if you have some FACTS, and not opinions, I would love to hear them. Thanks a lot. He is already extensively obedience trained. its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1007466430 |

You dont want a shelter dog? Poodle rescue is not a shelter they are dedicated bunch of people who rescue poodles from idiot people , probably like youself, who for some stupid reason can not take care of there dog. They take these dogs into their homes and nurse them back to health, so that possibly some day, someone , who actually love the breed will adopt them. Please do not knock rescue organizations , when you obviously know nothing about how they work.If you really wanted a standard poodle, why the heck are you looking on craigslist? Find a reputable(sp?) breeder, or better yet RESCUE ONE! 6 year old cat needs a loving home. It breaks my heart to get rid of her but she is a sensitive animal and my house with 2 other cats and a new baby is too stressful for her and i dont want her quality of life to suffer. She would thrive in single pet home. She has a very sweet lovable disposition, soft and cuddly, spayed and healthy, she is an indoor cat, she is very shy but once she warms up to you shell sit on your shoulder as you walk around the house and be purring up a storm! She is half maine coon half black tiger. She was the runt of her litter so she is very small and kitten like. Her name is Calypso, we call her Caly for short. I have been her only owner since she was 6 weeks old.Contact me for more info. its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1006861774 |

YOU WOULDNT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THEM GETTING ALONG BECAUSE THEY LOVE EACH OTHER, THEY COULD KEEP EACH OTHER COMPANY WHEN YOU GO TO WORK, ERIC IS SMALL SO IT IS REALLY 1 DOG AND 1/2, THEY WILL BRING YOU LOADS OF ENJOYMENT IN YOUR LIFE SHOWING HOW THE PLAY AND LOVE EACH OTHER, THEY ARE JUST LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO LOVE THEM ENOUGHT TO PULL THEM OUT OF THIS KILL SHELTER SO THEY CAN LIVE THE REST OF THEIR LIVES TOGEHTER Isnt Segar super handsome?! He is also a really good boy and loves to take walks, go on hikes, and would make a wonderful and loyal companion. If only he could tell us how he ended up in a high kill shelter! Can you find it in your heart to open up your loving home to Segar Doesnt Eric look like he knows all the secrets to the world! He is just so intelligent looking and handsome too. Brains and good looks - we should all be so lucky! ####Eric and Segar were found together, dodging traffic. When Segar was caught, Eric was on the opposite side of the highway howling and crying for his best friend. The animal control officers brought Segar out of the truck, and Eric ran right over and sat beside him. They are in the kennel together at the shelter, and if they are separated they cry for each other. They are literally best friends, and the shelter says theyve never seen such devotion in a pair of dogs. Wed LOVE to get them adopted together, but we realize that this might not be possible.Adoption Fee: DISCOUNT ADOPTION FEE OF $100 (transport included) ONLY IF YOU ADOPT ERIC AND SEGAR TOGETHER. includes neuter , heartworm test, shots, health certificate, and lots of kisses.http://www.helpsaveone.org/urgent-and-available-dogs.html its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1006772903 |

letter from shelter manager |
2009-01-25 12:29AM |
(Wanted to repost this so that more people will read it) (those of you who agree please re-post if deleted it would help*myspace, your blog anywhere*)A Letter from a Shelter Manager I think our society needs a huge \"Wake-up\" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will. First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the \"back\" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you dont even know. That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when its not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that theres about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are \"owner surrenders\" or \"strays\", that come into my shelter are purebred dogs. The most common excuses I hear are; \"We are moving and we cant take our dog (or cat).\" Really? Where are you moving too that doesnt allow pets? Or they say \"The dog got bigger than we thought it would\". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? \"We dont have time for her\". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! \"Shes tearing up our yard\". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me \"We just dont want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know shell get adopted, shes a good dog\". Odds are your pet wont get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isnt full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I dont, your pet wont get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the \"Bully\" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door. Those dogs just dont get adopted. It doesnt matter how sweet or well behaved they are. If your dog doesnt get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isnt full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just dont have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment. Heres a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being \"put-down\". First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to \"The Room\", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, its strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the \"pink stuff\". Hopefully your pet doesnt panic from being restrained and jerk. Ive seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all dont just \"go to sleep\", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves. When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? Youll never know and it probably wont even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right? I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and cant get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work. I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter. Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes. My point to all of this DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE! Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say \"I saw this and it made me want to adopt\". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1006635567 |

This same ad has been posted weekly for almost a year! If they havent found a dog after all this time - something seems odd. One of the dogs they usually mention is a poodle. The local poodle rescue has all sizes available.....why not go through them? What about one of the shelters? Most have waiting lists if theyre looking for a specific breed and meet the qualifications to adopt. The shelter calls when they get a dog that might be a match. The email address the \"nice family\" uses is jfitzge421@yahoo.com. Today theyve posted the same ad twice.Has anyone had any contact with these people? its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1006632248 |

Trade my Two tanks for a 75 or 55 gallon tank with Wooden stand!! (pic)
2009-01-24 3:08PM |
Ok, I have two tanks, looking to trade for a 75 gallon tank with a wooden stand, MAY consider another size tank, depending on what kind, I am looking for something wider and longer rather then taller, but needs to be at least a 50 gallon and have some more things to come with it, like screen top maybe, unlike the 75 gallon all I need is the tank and stand!! Thats all I need! Nothing else... do not need filters or anything, UNLESS you have a filter for an aquatic turtle.... BUT all I need is a 75 gallon tank, no hood or anything, just with a stand!! Thats it! Trade my two tanks for it!! Let me know.... Here are my tanks, a 50 gallon tall tank, with nice wooden stand, you get EVERYTHING in that tank! even the oscars if you want them!! Comes with complete setup, two filters, a heater, bubbler, everything you see!! Then, I have a 44 gallon pentagon fish tank, ONLY comes with stand, tank, NO HOOD, but do have the light fixtures for it and bulbs....you can buy a hood online, or at a pet store for 30-40 dollars..... (the light fixtures in the tank, and everything else are staying.....and those are not the light fixtures I have for the tank) its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1006058875 |
Advice: Recently adopted 1 yr old dog w/ possible aggression issues. |
2009-01-24 2:59PM |
So we recently adopted a beagle mix, 1 year old. He is not neutered , we already have plans to do so.We are looking for advice and input on how much of this is typical puppy/young dog behavior and if any of it might be a real aggression problem. Willing to be an open book if it helps you give us advice, Ill answer your questions. He is cuddly, energetic, house trained. The issues we are seeing:He absolutely refuses to give up things he shouldnt be eating, ie a piece of paper that was dropped on the floor or a stray tissue. When we try to get these things from him, he actually growls and tries to bite us.When someone comes to the door, he will not back away from the door and sometimes try to bite us when we try and get him to sit. This isnt teething, like the nipping when his chew toys are taken away. He actually whips his head around to try and bite me. Also...We were told he does well on the leash. (we adopted him from another family)MAYBE he is just getting used to us, after all a new family is a big change. However, he will absolutely not walk on the leash. He insists on running, which doesnt work well in the ice. I try to get him to walk beside me or at least WALK instead of run and he will not keep his feet on the ground, so it feels like he is being choked and even sounds like it. Were headed to go and buy him the gentle leader, and are hoping this will help some. Admittedly, were going to need some obedience help here. I prefer someone who would come into our place and do this. He responds to wait, go, usually does sit and out, and sometimes off. I really like this dog and would like to do everything I can for him. Hes still a young guy and a total sweetheart. Please note before replying, that Im REALLY trying here and I understand some , even most of this might just be him being new to us. I just want to be sure Im doing the right thing. Advice, suggestions on where to go for obedience training, as well as constructive criticism and questions. its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1006045604 |

ADORABLE Pinto, small, clownish Basset/Corgi Mix is one in a million! (pic)
2009-01-27 12:07AM |
To meet Pinto, please email emily@inourhandsrescue.org. Pinto is about 2 yrs old, 40 lbs and is some kind of Basset Mix--- originally I thought with Shepherd, but he is so small, I am starting to think its mixed with Corgi. He is very good with other dogs and in the shelter, he was kenneled with 4 other unneutered males. Hes fine with food-- no growling or anything. He is a lover-- he likes to be petted and dances playfully around-- very cute and \"Puckish\". He has no body sensitivity, is very good on the leash and is an all around good natured, jovial fellow. I think he will be good with kids 7+--- the only reason I place the age restriction is because he can be a little mouthy-- not much, and no pressure is applied, but it could be annoying. So far, he has been very quiet downstairs where he is kenneled, and though it is a task to get him in the crate, once hes there, he doesnt make a peep. He was good in the car-- but got a tiny bit carsick. Nothing much or devastating. I did need to tether him, but eventually he just layed down. Hes vaccinated for Rabies, Parvo, Distemper, dewormed with Panacur and will be neutered on a few days-- also heartworm tested NEGATIVE. A reasonable adoption fee to assist with expenses is requested. We are a 501 c 3 non-profit organization. To learn more about Pinto, please email emily@inourhandsrescue.org. Please keep in mind, rescue expenses are very high, as we vet our dogs well. The adoption fee is not negotiable, but we will always be a safety net for the dog in case you need training advice or cannot keep him or her. its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1009267302 |

OP poster for the 50 gallon tank for sale |
2009-01-26 12:49PM |
I am sorry you feel I should be flagged for trying to find a home for my tank. I know your opinions because you emailed me yesterday asking me to stop posting, and were very rude about it. Now as for salt goes, I feel salt is very beneficial for all tanks. Every water hole, including, ponds and rain puddles are filled with salt from the atmisphere, some more then others. Now when we make our own environments for our fish, there is alot of things we lack from a natural water source, and we as individuals have to accomadate for that. You also emailed me last night for the fact that I should research a fish before getting it because I was giving away my Oscars for free. Now, I have been doing fish my whole life. Had plenty of oscars in the past I have had grow up to be huge for over 14 yrs. Now, I am giving them away, because I have two baby snapping turtles that need a VERY large tank. In this economy it is hard keeping up tanks. Both my Oscars and turtles will need larger tanks, and right now with the plumit of our budgets have decided to only have one large tank. I have found a great home for my oscars with someone with a 220 gallon tank, they will be picked up this evening. I refused some people that wanted my oscars WITH my tank, because I did not want someone to think they could get my tank with the oscars and have them stay in that tank. I told people that required about my tank and oscars together that unless they could get a bigger tank soon they could not have both together. Now that I have found a home for the oscars, I am looking to sell me tank. And might I put that this is the best price so far I have seen for this tank. I have seen 20 gallon tanks going for alot more... like the one below. So if you have a problem with me trying to sell my tank, I am very sorry. $100 for my tank is a great asking price, and I am selling it for that cheap, because I have gotten my use out of it, and everything deminishes its value after awhile. Although some people on here seem to think there tanks are worth alot more then they are. I have had this tank for two years, and the filters are less then a year old, But again, I know this economy stinks, and if I sell for cheap, it will be sold eventually. I could raise the price to $250 like some other people, but all I want is a good home for it! Again, sorry you feel the way you do. But do not come on here and bash, and say I am spamming etc. Some people do not search for a fish tank, and just come on here and see whats around, and everyday, or hour that goes by my tank gets brought to the bottom, just want to find a good home for it... otherwise, will just disassemble and keep in my garage for later use. But figured someone may want it, instead of paying a crazy fee for one! its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1008366096 |

Step1Consider your space and what kind of fish you want. To do this, consult with someone at a pet store who has been trained in aquarium setup and maintenaince. They are one of your best resources when it comes to this process. They will be able to tell you what size tank youll need for the type and number of fish you want.Step2Once youve purchased your supplies, place your tank stand somewhere that is not subject to drafts or direct sunlight. Also avoid areas that are extremely busy in your house (as this can stress your fish) and the kitchen due to smoke or cooking sprays that can land in the water.Step3Place the tank on the stand and make sure it is level and straight.Step4Wipe the tank out with a wet paper towel.Step5Place your gravel in a strainer and rinse it until water runs completely clear.Step6Gently place the gravel in the tank and spread it out evenly. Youll need about an inch to an inch and a half of gravel.Step7Place your filter on or in the tank, depending on the kind you purchased. The filter should come with directions on how to set it up. Dont turn it on yet. Place a cartrige or other filter medium in the appropriate slot.Step8Place the heater in the tank if you are going with tropical fish.Step9Rinse any decorations and place them in the tank. If you are using an air stone or a bubbling decoration, hook this up to the air pump at this time and place the bubbling end at the desire point in the tank.Step10Fill the tank with water, stopping about an inch and a half from the top. You want there to be a short drop between the water coming out of the filter and the water level in the tank. If you are adding plants, place them after you have filled the tank about halfway. This way you can tell what they look like wet and they are easier to move around.Step11Add the appropriate amount of conditioner and aquarium salt. (Even freshwater fish need a small amount of salt to keep them healthy.)Step12Place the hood on top of the tank, making sure that all the equipment fits through the appropriate openings. Most hoods have perforated sections that can be cut or punched out to make room. Never let the hood sit on top of an air line or electrical cord.Step13Place the light on top of the hood if it is separate, plug it in and turn it on.Step14Turn on your filter and air pump. Always follow your filters directions. Many of the filters that hang over the back of the tank require you to fill the reservoir with water before turning it on.Step15Your tank should now be looking beautiful and your filter and pump should be humming along nicely. Wipe any drips off the outside of the tank and stand. Admire your handiwork and perform any other necessary cleanup. After 15 minutes have passed, plug in your heater.Step16The hardest part is not the setup, but waiting to fill your tank with fish. Wait at least 5 days before slowly starting to add your little aquatic buddies. Again, follow the advice of a fish expert on how many and how often you can add fish. its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1008359094 |

Years of experience usually proves that the older methods are still the best methods,,,a lil Aquarium Salt has always proven to help fish especially in less than perfect tanks---because we ALL know that people who have fish tanks-my self included - maintain their tanks at optimal levels at all times--Right??Or maybe we should stop pumping air into our tanks and rely on plant life to balance the fake ecosystem we created??? its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1008318453 No contact info? if the poster didnt include a phone number, email, or other contact info, craigslist can notify them via email. |

I am not the OP,,but the responder to this--calling for a flag,,,is WRONG!!You INDEED add salt to a FRESH WATER tank,,,not as much as needed for Marine Fish but Aquarium Salt is needed to replenish vital electrolytes that the fish need under stress from aggression, water changes etc,,,Whether someone is posting 100 X a day is one thing but to call for a FLAG and also give out FALSE info is equally wrong and dangerous to those with their own tanks!DO RESEARCH before you make a statement like that!!!http://www.bestfish.com/fwsalt.html its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1008268916 |

A few people emailed me asking why I wanted them, which I think they were asking if I was going to be using them as snake food! Not the case! They will have a great forever home here!!) its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1008246417 |

I have never posted before, but I like to keep up on animals in need so I can let clients know when an animal needs help....You see, I work in an animal hospital. I have done so for 18 years and I have never seen it so bad, as right now.Doctors and staff that work for vets DO NOT make alot of money. On average a receptionist makes from 9 to 12 dollars an hour. If they have experience... Techs make a little more if they have schooling behind them. But if they have to pay back their school loans, then it averages the same. Doctors who work for hospitals, after paying all their students loans from going to school make about nothing. The biggest thing that is bothering me the most, is when people say those famous words....Wow I must have just paid for the new wing to be put on this hospital, my bill is so much.Answer...no you did not , after the staff is paid, supplies are paid, building is paid, insurance is paid, staff insurance is paid, Etc Etc Etc. Not alot left Animal hospitals do not get donations from the community to help with assistance programs, shelters do.Animal hospitals are not there to adopt out your pets, shelters are.Last week alone we had 3 people walk out of our hospital with out paying their bill at check out...over 4 thousand dollars worth of supplies and service. GONESo yes we now insist half the estimate be paid before anything happens. It is sad that we have to, but it seems more and more people are doing this. If those people had gone to Walmart and stolen that merchandise they would have been arrested...but we now have to take them to court to get that money. Costing us even more. Are you starting to see the pattern.???? Talk to any person who works in an animal hospital, I bet you will find a person who goes home to multiple pets. Most of them abandoned at the hospital in a card board box or the ever so famous line...please find a home...I cant afford to pay to fix the problem. I can speak only for myself when I say I love my job but that I am not responsible for what happens to YOUR pet or pets. The guilt I go home with when an animal could have been saved but for the lack of money the owner decised it is better to euthanize, KILLS me. On these days I go home and love my 23 pets, a little harder. Yes, I care for 23 pets in my home. Most have come from the years of working in the field. My kids (the animals) have problems, from being blind, deaf, missing limbs, to emotional scars that they hold onto for life. I can not take in anymore than I have because I know this is all I can afford. Half of my pay check goes to the kids. I also have a credit card that does not get used just in case an emergency comes up. Cutting coupon, grooming my own dogs at Soapy dog (a do it yourself grooming shop), making my own cat toys. The biggest thing for me is at my B-Day and X-mas times I ask family and friends to give me visa gift cards so I can use those for my vet bill when I take one in to the hospital. In the summer months every town has a Rabies clinic, call your town now to see when they have it..it will save money. I know that I am very LUCKY to have a spouse who makes the money to maintain the house and I can focus on our kids but if we did not have the funds we would not have opened our house to them. It is that simple. What I tell clients when they complain about the yearly vaccination appointment is this...if you put 15 dollars a week away. By the time your appointment comes next year you will be set. So dont order out, stop smoking, put your cellphone away, cut down on your movie watching and take your dog for a walk. You will both enjoy life more. its ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1008024315 |
Wicked Cute Shy Shelter Kitten For Adoption (pic)

Meet Cupcake, a buff colored tuxedo kitten with a white bib and boots. She it totally adorable and about 3.5 to 4 months old. She and another kitten were left at our back door in a box a couple of weeks ago. The other kitten found her wonderful forever home this weekend but Cupcake is still looking. She is a little on the shy side and will need extra TLC but is very sweet and pettable with a cute littlebaby meow call she likes to make. I wouldnt put her with small children as the all the comotion will just make her hide. A nice quiet adult only home with another young kitty would be purr-fect ! Cupcake has had no vet care at this point. Except we have dewormed her once at the shelter. She is clean with no fleas. There will be no feebut there is a $25 spay/neuter deposit. You will get this $25 after spaying her by 6 months of age. This is mandatory and is followed up on. Looking for an adopter that can provide a vet reference to ensure Cupcake will get all the proper care she needs now and throughout the rest of her life. The shelter is in RI about 1 hour south of Boston. Please email me with info about the home you would have for her. Indoor or Outdoor? Would you declaw? Any other pets in the home? I signed the petition \"Economic Crisis Leaves Pets Hungry Too\". Im asking you to sign this petition to help us reach our goal of 10,000 signatures. I care deeply about this cause, and I hope you will support our efforts.Click here to help now!Economic Crisis Leaves Pets Hungry TooTarget: U.S. CongressDuring the global economic crisis people are sacrificing a lot but they are not the only ones. Household pets, often considered to be a part of the family, are affected by financial hardship as well. Owners of dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, chickens and even iguanas are finding it increasingly difficult to feed and care for their additional family members. The health and safety of pets depend on loving care which sometimes has substantial costs. Pet food and regular veterinary care are necessities for companion animals, but the costs add up quickly. One such animal suffering due to the financial meltdown is horses, majestic yet expensive animals. Hay and feed prices have escalated while owner incomes remain fixed or are declining. But there is a glimmer of hope. Some area food pantries are recognizing the desperate need for animal care, and are distributing pet food along with their grocery donations. Tell Congress that our families including our pets need help accessing food during the economic crisis. its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1005578896 No contact info? if the poster didnt include a phone number, email, or other contact info, craigslist can notify them via email. |

We are in no rush to rehome our puppies. We can temporarily re-home them at my moms until we find a really great home. We do not, and I mean do not want to give them away. We are getting kicked out of our current place.Under our circumstances, we have to try to rehome them.I can not separate the two. I know that it will be hard to find a home that will accept two large breeds, but they have never been separated... so I just cant. Please email me for more info. barking dog |

HELP KEEP THE PEACE BY KEEPING YOUR OUTDOOR DOG QUIETWhen a certain family living not far from me goes out of town for the weekend, all the neighbors know it. The reason? The familys lonely, frustrated outdoor dog barks until they come home. While other neighbors are likely wishing the dog ill in the wee hours of a Sunday morning, I always find myself feeling sorry for him. My less-than-charitable thoughts usually center around the people who are responsible for him -- or should be.Such people live in every neighborhood. Are you responsible for not keeping the peace in yours? The owners of problem barkers seem to develop an ability to ignore the noise that has their neighbors thinking of legal action -- or maybe murder. But a dog whos barking constantly isnt having any more fun than the neighbors are, and you owe it to both your pet and those who can hear him to fix this problem. The first step is to figure out why your dog is sounding off so much. Dogs bark to express a variety of emotions: anxiety, boredom, territoriality, aggression, playfulness, hunger. Certain conditions in a dogs environment can trigger these emotions -- and barking fits -- more frequently. The typical neighborhood nuisance is like the dog who lives near me: an outdoor dog who isnt getting the attention and exercise he needs. Dogs are social animals, and they need to be part of a family. If your dog is outside because of poor manners or because he isnt house-trained, give him another chance. Ask your veterinarian for a referral to a trainer or behaviorist, and arrange for an in-home consultation to fix the underlying problems.Once youve brought him into your life, keep him busy with regular outings. Exercise, both of the body and of the mind, works wonders for all dogs, especially those who bark from boredom or to release excess energy. Youll be amazed at how much calmer, happier -- and quieter -- your dog will be if you exercise him regularly. For indoor barking, teach your dog to be quiet by distracting him, saying the word \"Quiet\" or \"Enough,\" and then praising him for minding -- hell make the connection soon enough, with repetition and lots of praise. Rattling a can filled with pennies is a commonly recommended distraction, and it works well. Shouting at your dog does nothing except make you feel temporarily better.Work to minimize barking cues to keep your indoor dog quiet when youre not home. If your dog barks while looking through a window that faces the street, keep him out of that room while youre gone. Many dogs fire up when they hear car doors slam; other dogs bark at the mail carriers steps on the walk. Muffle these sounds by leaving a radio playing while youre not home, and your pet is more likely to sleep than bark. Giving your dog something special to chew on, such as a Kong toy or hollow bone stuffed with a little peanut butter, will help keep him occupied and quiet while hes awake. For the most persistent barkers, consider an anti-bark collar that works with smell, not shock. These battery-operated collars, which are available online or in catalogs, release a spray of citronella mist each time a dog barks. The mist is harmless to the dog -- the citrus tang smells good to humans, but dogs hate it. The hiss of the mist releasing from the canister and the smell itself are annoying enough to distract the dog and correct him for barking. Surgical debarking is another option, but I dont recommend it unless the barking is putting the dogs life at risk and all other avenues have been tried.Chances are, though, that if you bring your dog into your home and train him, youll not even need to consider an anti-bark collar or surgery. Your dog will be happier, and so will your neighbors. its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interestsPostingID: 1005503296 |
