has already succumbed to Alzheimers that it has robbed him not only of the memory of a rich life well lived but also of his own self awareness and by extension his pride nobility and dignity He possesses such an exquisite sense of self and so dearly wants to be independent that he refuses to passively accept his own deterioration Mr Driftwoods gift his resilience in the face of an insidiously creeping Alzheimers is his inviolable dignity This is a man who fights tooth and nail during baths and during rehab a man who absolutely insists any and all assistance in moving around This is a man whose sense of self control is so acute and vital to him that simply moving backward in a wheelchair meaning he is not in control of his own destination is grounds for immense anxiety and rebellion in him to control his motion This is a man who ripped a cup of medicine from my hands in the hospital not 3 days from his angioplasty because he hated being fed by a hand besides his own save his wifes I believe Mr Driftwoods dignity and self worth are the antidotes to an accelerated decline In his mind he still knows that he is the patron of a large and wonderful family In his voice reverberates a tone full of caring humor and expansive confidence yet a tone that also can instill fear and capitulation in those around him I have witnessed on many occasions various famil members flinching intensely at the boom of his still commanding voice a voice that is an exquisite artifact of the Mr Driftwood of old As his self worth is front and center in his sparring Alzheimers I employed numerous ways to underscore his regal powerful nature First I always made a point of thankinghim for various contributions Never was this gratitude feigned or otherwise more visibly effective than after he finished playing a song on piano Heaping praise upon him always precipitated one of those priceless Driftwood smiles a smile that very clearly expresses his appreciation of being valued by another Another tool I used to highlight his worth was a respect of an older etiquette that isnt practiced so often these days Please and Thank You go a great distance in facilitating Byrons cooperation and willingness to participate in any desired activity Moreover the verbal piece of these interactions is clearly vital for him A third tool to encouraging Byrons positive self awareness is to ask him questions or solicit his assistance sustained eye contact is very key here For instance with an inquiring tone you can say something to the effect of Mr Driftwood Im having trouble with my homework a set of simple arithmetic problems can you help me Or Jeez I feel really sick my stomach hurts what should I do In the latter example even if he doesnt understand sometimes I often see a strong flicker of compassion on his face and a desire to help A fourth tool is self deprecation Again I see best results here in front of the piano when I play a bit and then say Mr Driftwood I am AWFUL Almost every time he responds with a chuckle and sometimes something like Dont worry about it Such deprecation gives him the chance to be the reassuring grampa figure he has inside More tricks to keeping his self concept high are less verbal and more procedural Specifically in the few weeks before my departure I was moving him forward in the chair more often than backwards to better results He actually helps in the locomotion as long as you give him a goal or incentive to move I strongly suggest pushing the wheelchair for as long as it is still needed forward despite that it takes longer and is a little more work Another trick albeit a more abrasive one is that during baths and de robing moments I really do think that if there is no chance of verbally encouraging him to help you it is best to snip the struggle as short as possible Specifically it is better to just strip his pants off than trying to coddle him into understanding or helping as such treatment usually prolongs the struggle and oftentimes creates the same aggrieved dude that occurs when the pants are stripped Beyond and often intertwined with enhancing his self concept some ways that I tried to improve his quality of life in perceived order of importance were through rehab music talking humor exercise coordination work encouraging eye contact and curious eyes in general and keeping him occupied when he wouldnt otherwise be Ill expand on each of these to some degree Improving Mr Driftwoods walking during rehab was one of my foremost goals while with him as much for his family as for him Clearly if he can start walking and moving around on his own many of the days small traumas and anxieties will be alleviated As you saw the best trick to getting Byron walking is lifting him to the same page as you meaning that he will walk better and longer when he wants to this again ties into what I said above about the dignity and stubbornness he possesses at his core To get him to want to takes firm prompting and sometimes playful voice tones Eye contact while stating things such as Lets Go Over there and Cmon is important but not always pivotal If words fail for about 3 minutes I recommend just forcing him up as this is successful so long as he forgets that he has the option of sitting in the chair for this reason I always tried to direct his attention forward with my hand when force walking him I really think that if you guys can get him rehabbing 5 times a week or so he may walk on his own in the near future Another key aspect of walking for him and perhaps the next step of the process I think his physical therapist is with me here is getting him to re learn how to stand on his own This process is best achieved from the side of the bed once it has been elevated a bit It is just as important for his self reliance to be able to stand as it is to walk Often when we were alone I would verbally prepare him to leave were going out coax him to the side of the bed give him his crutches and let him struggle to stand for a while before helping him into the wheelchair Its not terribly fun to watch him struggle but he was certainly progressing at standing as you guys saw on the Friday when he stood for a few seconds in the few weeks before my departure I think that if we can get Mr Drfitwood to play piano even half as good as he used to it would be a major accomplishment and one that I feel is very possible I was especially buoyed by that miraculous performance on Monday of my last week Helping him on piano can be very enervating and frustrating but with some patience I think we can jumpstart his ragtime mind Rapport certainly the most important factor for his piano success as is good timing wakefulness I recommend getting him in front of the piano twice or thrice daily and interspersing 5 minute sessions the moments when he is most apt to play with playing ball or doing something else stimulating Pointing at the page is also super important and getting his eyes to register the music is similarly tricky and key Getting his hands on the piano helps as does encouraging straight posture a difficult feat Phrases that Ive used to success Mr Driftwood that was awesome will you play another Hey Mr Driftwood can I ask you something pause will you play this song point Im awful you try this song This is tough but Im sure our tenacity will pay off dont get down Verbal interaction with Mr Driftwood was one of my favorite parts of the job I always enjoyed trying to find new ways of cracking him up In my experiments with Driftwood dialogue and often the absence thereof I found several keys to stimulating his verbal participation Rhyming or sonorous voice tones are more apt to give him rise than flat tones Subjects to his liking Chaplin Garbo Gable the Holy Hackenpuss Trinity engage his interest more as they do for all people Just saying Hackenpuss or Driftwood can act as a safety net if hes ticked at you for being too much in his face He also responds well to deprecating curious or jovial tones paired with touch or putting your face in front of his Humor of course is a key for Byron and as such I would literally use those three ticklers Bates motel doodliest dood Im awful 10 or so times to make him laugh each day I encourage you guys to talk to him regularly and tellhim jokes as if he could understand them Who knows he might surprise you with one of those avuncular chortles and that beaming face of his In terms of exercise I think the ball throwing is very valuable as it is pretty much the only way his burns any calories gets any endorphins aside from rehab Additionally its a good tool to wake him up and get his eyes more interested in their surroundings Pretty simple to play with him and fun too Mr Driftwoods eye movement is key to getting him interested in the external world which is most important indeed I hate remembering that month after surgery where he so often looked just at the ground but I use the memory as an indicator of his upward progression Throwing the ball again is an easy way to get his eyes moving Hand gestures are important Also certain strong voice tones grab his gaze well You gotta pick each tone based on each moment though as sometimes a loud funny tone works better than a soft one whereas sometimes the reverse is true Also if you can catch him gazing out a window or through a door I tried to make a point of engaging him with something beyond the room he is in For instance while looking out the window you can comment on the sky or point out at a cloud best naturally is when through the azure comes the distant figure of a plane Less important than most of these above keys is keeping him occupied ALL THE TIME However if you want to keep him stimulated a bit while hes eating or before he sleeps you can always put Hopes computer with a video clip on the table or in his lap to fill in the dead time I sent you Youtube clips to play for him should you choose to do this In sum I think that you sweet family and your trusty sidekicks have every capacity to help the Drift continue improving as he has so drastically over the past 2 months He is an incredibly tough dude and deep inside of him sometimes it seems not deep at all exists a well of power and resilience that you can tap in the war against Alzheimers He believes in his importance in the world and he thrives on the lavish attention he receives from those around him I believe profoundly that despite his condition Mr Driftwood is a happy and healthy individual Knowing this I must insist that you guys be as tough as he is Look at all the crap he has to take on a daily basis But his humor survives as does his tenacity in pushing back against a disease with the power to render a person completely passive in the daily rituals of their own lives Does Mr Driftwood seem passive to you Heck no Hes a fighter every chop I took from him every stomach kick and clipboard whack inspired me to try even harder to to head up north to a beach town called Maitencillo We lug our gear back into Horcon and opt to grab the hot meal that the rain robbed from us last night We plunk down in a classy oceanview joint and peruse the menu Instantly one dish call to me in reverse Little Shop of Horros style EAT ME EAT ME EAT ME I oblige Oh Paila Marina I will never forgot your seafood sumptuousness Your mussel morsels your crumbly crab your replenishing razorbacks your rich rock shrimp All plucked and shucked from the shore not 50 meters from my table Hmmm Your limey butter broth still coats my tummy The carnage of corrugated shells emerging from your bowl lingers in my mind like a rampart Yum Vegeterian that she is Emily nibbles her egg of french fries Hah Belly satiated mind fresh despite minced sleep we trudge out of town up a rather nasty hill back to our coastal hitching The thumb swiping is slow as few cars pass so I hackeysack to the tail swatting bemusement of a cult of strays Having protected us though the night Angel departed sometime in the morning Emily tries to teach me a tough juggling trick A few handstands and some trail mix later we catch a ride north with a smiley middle aged hippie lawyer He drives us the 40 odd kms to Maitencillo and describes an isloated beach north of town before leaving us at a supermarket where we load up on bread veggies and various tonics We move down to the beach which is overlooked by all manner of vividly pained summer homes now likely abandoned in the winter seaon they call it winter here but the weather is exquisite udring the day and only a little chilly at night Walking north a couple km along the beach happy strays romping about broken seashels underfoot birds wheeling overhead we escape town and find the little cove our lawyer pal mentioned The beach is bereft of human construction save a dilapidated shack that might have once provided shelter for one conquistador or another Naturally we must provide the place some human geometry so we construct the tent in a clearing amongst the iceplant carpet above the beach The view from our front porch is intense Sliver moon sun taking a melting glass elevator over the horizon waves flinging themselves onto shore then sighing over sand as they retreat to repeat the process After the sun makes its getaway the task of fire rises to the fore 20 minutes of gloamy gathering nets us a scraggly bundle of kindling some midsized stuff and a few very damp logs Best of all for our fire prospects is that we forgot to buy paper in the market Crap nvisioning the unspeakable horror of consecutive nights without hot food Emily and I raze our packs for burnable matter She loots 10 or so pages of vaccine information she never ended up needing I find my South America on a Shoestring guidebook Conjuring my Boy Scout pyromania I spent the next hour desperately trying to tease flame from wet carbon The first casualty Emily s vaccine info falls to ash without hint of heat from the pathetic teepee twig formation in the firepit Thanks to poor placement in the alphabetized guidebook Argentina smolders and fades away No twig life yet Bolivia s thin sheets fight hard for the cause Morales would be proud and elecit a few crackles from the pit As I blow Brazil into flames Rio de Janeiro stings my eyes as she smokes Iguazu burns my lungs Salvador stains my cheeks Still no fire but the twigs have begun to cackle a bit to whisper emphysemically of a higher plane of being of life as smoke and ash Colombia dear weet tormented ally Colombia breathes a lava orange into the twigs Bogota Cartagena Medellin your incendiary deaths were not in vain From your ink flowed light from your parchment a warmth to last the ages Or at least long enough to catch the twigs which caught the sticks which caught the branches which caught the logs that swallowed the fly Hoohoo 30 minutes after noble Colombia s sacrifice we have a coal base and are listening to the sweet growing sizzle of Isla Damas for some island camping Of course there s no chance of that if those 5 cars Ben told us to expect decide not to lift a coupla gringos in the right direction Again visions of camping in the desert with only some fruit and veggies the sweet couple gave us dance in my mind We sit We wait The wind makes wind sounds The cacti stare at us with their arms spread as if to invite us into a needly hug The rocks around us lolligag in the dust Finally a white van bounces up the road towards us funny this van because Ben pointed out to us that the senator s son dealing drugs to fisherpeople owned a van fitting this very description The van stops Driver offers us a ride to Punta Chorros Hoohoo this is too dern easy As we bounce our way over the rocky road we discover that our driver is indeed the senator s son though I hold my curious tongue from asking him about how much profit he can make from selling crack to impoverished fishermen Drugdealing aside he is good conversation Tells us about constructing his geodesic dome home About Chilean surfing competitions About future plans to uncover the greatest shipwreck gold discovery the world has ever seen He drops us at a little grocery in Punta Chorros and waves goodbye Sort of innocently slimy in a rich kid dunno what to do with my life sense Emily and I load up on newspaper veggiestuffs and the prerequisite Chilean wine We head down to the pier where we are intercepted by a leatherfaced fisherman He pitches to us a boat tour of the wildlife on Isla Cha aral for 5 bucks Sensing our entry point we mention our interest in being dropped off on Isla Damas for the night and being picked up the following day Leatherface tells us camping is prohibited during the winter months but that there are no rangers patrolling the island right now We do a little money dance and agree that 30 is fine for a tour of Cha aral and a drop off pick up on Isla Damas Wow Nobody but us the stars and the waves on Isla Damas tonight So we shoulder our gear push through a conference of pelicans and fisherman to the pier where we don our life jackets and shove off As we say ciao to the mainland for a day a sea otter glides past us cutting a vee shorewards The sun ricochets off its glossy fur before a big swell nixes our backwards vision The water is rough and our 7 meter boat dips in the troughs such that we are in a horizonless valley of blue for a moment before the sea panorama consumes us again As we approach Isla Cha aral a terrible stench greets us The smell is somewhere between post trek yak and ham sandwich lost in fridgerator innards Paired delightfully with this odor is a raucous noise sounding something like a gang of St Bernard s attempting opera for the first time conducted by a dying albatross suffering from Tourettes Our guide sidles the boat into a thin channel that separates a huge iceberg of rock from the shore of Isla Cha aral The berg positively writhes with sea lions Behemoth brutally barking bewhiskered blockhead antiballetic ballistically booming beasts these brutes are an absolute show They straggle gracelessly onto the berg from the water their fins clawing at the rock before oftentimes sliding back into the water They bite and slap echo sea lion expletives into eachothers cauliflower ears They breathe fish stink into eachother s slitted noses Here a lumbering gray beast arcs his neck 70 degrees in vulgar mimicry of a yoga pose Here a sc rred lion falls 10 feet from his perch into the water in a perfectly unintended bellyflop Here a baby sea lion stepped on by a fat waddler seeking better sun Something about this berg of brutes is like watching in slow motion a car full of clowns hit a brick wall at 40 mph It is disgusting and wondorously entertaining Except for the poo smells of course We leave the berg to its cacophonic messiness and head parallel with the shore towards Isla Damas a thin line in the distance Shortly after our sea lion experience our guide stops the boat again Two tuxedoed waddlers They are hopping awkwardly around polished stones Wild penguins for the first time in my life Wow Yeah Penguins are supposed to be awe inspiring right Hmm Ok They do walk funny it does look as if they re primed for a winter formal Aside from that not terribly impressed Moving on We pass a few more doddering penguins before leaving Isla Cha aral in our wake Again our guide lets the boat sputter to a halt This time we are surrounded by ocean Great I m thinking we ve run out of gas But our fisherman s eyes are trained on the water and soon a fin and then 5 more emerge from the water Bottle nosed dolphins A curious pod of six inspects our boat from a distance of 10 feet or so Their surreal skin glints under the sun s shine They are as streamlined and elegant as their sea lion counterparts were not Underwater their refracted forms their gliding grayness reminds me of looking at Half Dome through a kaleidoscope Beautiful aquatic angels They sniff around our hull for a little while and like ambivalent aliens finding nothing of great enough interest to warrant further scrutiny they depart for the horizon A touching and otherworldly experience Welcomed to this sector of water by the dolphins we move on to Isla Damas The rocky isle stretches the length of 10 Joe Montana Hail Mary s put end to end and the breadth of a score of elephants At its center a spout of rock sporting a wee lighthouse shoots up The fisherman drops us at the pier and tells us that he or a friend will pick us up ma ana although he insists we pay in full rather than the half we agreed upon He describes a sheltered area for camping and bids us farewell Over the next two afternoon hours what eco tourist scour the island are ferried away by other fishermen As dawn encroaches Emily and I explore Isla Damas We encounter a cornucopia of seashells various cacti some shiny red berries that Emily refuses to let me try and a few roosting birds composed more of shadow than feathers Furthermore we discover or at least pretend that the discovery is ours 2 whitesand beaches arcing around different island bays Indeed we are alone on this composition of sand shell and rock The sky has begun bruising at the counters a frail veil of fog passes over us like a cellophane shadow Waves tickle shore boulders We set up camp Pacific waves lap 5 meters from the tent Our tinfoil dinner sizzles in a hot easy fire A purple sky settles mellow over the island which is ours and ours alone for this night Wine pulls starlight closer We sleep Wow you
